Cheap Tiffany Keys supreme court ruled |
Supreme court protects free speech Many americans recoil at the idea that religious beliefs make it ok to force women into subjugation. So why is deference given to the antigay bigotry of church leaders who oppose gay marriage? The remarkable thing is that the abhorrent treatment of women by the taliban is not rooted in theocracy at all;Nothing in the koran says women must be forced to wear burqas, for example(Although muslim cultural traditions call for personal modesty for both sexes). The taliban treatment of women is rooted far more in politics than faith. And westerners rightly are aghast at it. Yet somehow it acceptable to many here to express distaste for gays, or support for discrimination against gays, on the grounds of christian teachings.Maryland was all set to approve a bill allowing gay marriage, but the bill is temporarily stalled, the washington post reports wednesday. One of the state legislators explained the situation to the post: Del.Tiffany kowz Earrings t.Alston(D-Prince george's)Said in an interview that she needed more time"To think and to pray"About what she considers a"Deeply personal issue for myself and my constituents. " How is it personal, unless alston is talking about gays and lesbians in her district who are tired of being told they are somehow lesser than heterosexual couples?[Check out our editorial cartoons on gay marriage.] In another piece, the post reports that some african-American church leaders are upset with president obama decision not to defend the indefensible defense of marriage act in the courts: "I don't think that this is a deal breaker in terms of whether we are going to support the president. But it doesn't help,"Said cheryl sanders, pastor of a small church in the district, who described herself as fairly conservative theologically. We meant to be a country led by laws, not religion.Freedom of religion doesn mean one can hide behind religious teachings to discriminate against others. The first amendment trumps it all, the Cheap Tiffany Keys supreme court ruled wednesday, in a decision rightly upholding the right of antigay protesters to continue extremely offensive displays at military funerals.Neither the courts nor congress can impose good manners and decency on anyone.News debate:Should military funeral protests be protected by the first amendment?] Freedom of speech means homophobes in government and churches can say what they like.Troops in afghanistan. Check out this month's best political cartoons. There's some interesting logic here. Many bigots are against gay marriage. Therefore anyone who is against gay marriage is a bigot. It's easy to make the case that doma descrimininates against gays.Except that it's also easy to make the case that it doesn't;Any man and woman can marry. The fact that for some people that kind of marriage isn't what they want doesn't show discrimination or bigotry *on a logical level* any more than someone who agrees with laws against polygamy is a bigot:Many ultraconservative members of certain religions believe that a marriage, a real one, requires more than two people.Do we descrimininate against them because they are immoral?Because there are few of them?Because they don't have good pr?Because we do t think they are sincere in their beliefs?By the logic of this article none of those are good reasons. The real argument is that same sex marriage should be allowed because people really want it, and gay people have suffered a lot in the past and should now get what they want. There's something to that argument. But it's also possible to disagree with it without being Cheap Tiffany Pendants a bigot. In the end this article is about one thing:Calling people names who disagree with you so you can feel good about yourself. There's something to be said for that, too.But doing so doesn't make you a shining beacon of what is good and right. How dare these african americans tell me that i cannot marry my partner because my marriage would not be equal to theirs.I helped fight for their freedoms in the 60's.My partner and i have been together for 35 years. How does that endanger anyone else's marriage.I am more worried about priests than i am about same sex marriage partners. The divorce rate is astronimal yet we who sincerely love each other are still second class citizens.Religion has no place in our government. It seems very few remember the words"Separation of church and state. " Regarding doma(Which is unrelated to the topic at hand, so far as i can tell), a President can take care to see that laws are faithfully executed without defending their constitutionality before the courts. The two actions are separate and distinct, and there are historical precedents for administrations going into court to plead that a law is unconstitutional or deliberately botching the case in order to lose, while enforcing it until the court rules. (In the interests of brevity, i won't provide citations. )So sorry, robert Earrings of wa, but you're wrong. I thought the point raised by the article was that the right to free speech, even if such speech is viewed by many as hateful or despicable, is protected under our constitution. There is no question this is so. Finally, let me offer a proposition: "Mind your own business! What a wonderful prescription for happiness, as an individual, a community, or a nation. "Having been happily married to the same woman for 35 years, i have yet to understand how our relationship, or our community, would be harmed by allowing same-Sex couples to enjoy the legal and social benefits of marriage.Indeed, if i thought so, i would be heartbroken to admit our relationship was so fragile or shallow.
